Dabangg 2 || Review

It is the time for yet another cop story in Bollywood, within a month's gap. After Amir's 'Talaash' and Akshay's 'Khiladi 786', next chance is for Salman to wear Kaakhi. The sequel of 'Dabangg' got released and Chulbul Pandey, the Robinhood cop is once again there to entertain.

The new story happens in Kanpur, as the police inspector hero is transferred to that place. Before that, there are few changes in the cast and technicians list. Salman's brother Arbaaz Khan is the new director in place of Abhinav Kashyap. The new villain is Prakash Raj. The real star of the previous version was none other than its action director Fefsi Vijayan and now, another Southie, Anal Arasu gets the chance to blast after his notable fight scenes in 'Rowdy Rathore'. The movie is produced by Arbaaz's wife Malaika Arora, who did a guest appeanrance in the song; another item dancer in the movie is none other than Kareena Kapoor.

In the new place, Chulbul Pandey (Salman Khan) has to come across the local don cum politician Bachha Bhai (Prakash Raj). The latter has got two brothers, who always assist him in his criminal activities. On a crucial kidnapping incident, one of them gets killed by the hands of the police officer and Bachha is adamant in taking revenge.

There is nothing special in the story line. It is all the same as every action movies do. In between, you have got some family oriented situations, where the hero's wife, father and brother participates. After doing an action scene, hero will be seen in a song, followed by some drama, then a couple of item dances, then romance... like that the episode goes, without boring. In the end, hero takes the revenge and becomes the winner.

It is all in all Salman Khan's movie. He did the role in a stylized manner, with a mix of humour and action. He is energetic in dances as well as stunt scenes. Sonakshi Sinha gave a good support. Prakash Raj is in his usual style, but the dubbing is not in the right pace, a more suitable and powerful voice artist should have been used here. The action director is once again the star like the first part. The fight sequences in the introduction scene and the climax area choreographed by Anal Arasu were really electrifying. Bg score by Sandeep Shirodkar goes with the mood. Songs by Sajid Wajid had got a mix of peppy and item numbers, which adds tempo to the story. They are also colorfully visualized. Cinematographers Aseem Mishra and Mahesh Limaye did a fair job.

" Dabangg 2 is a mass masala action entertainer and it is a feast for Salman fans."

Jack Reacher || Review

The new Bollywood release, that too by 'MI' fame Tom Cruise, 'Jack Reacher' has reached theaters, with a short notice. I came to know about this movie last week only, when I happened to see its trailer, in between some other show. The movie is based on the famous novel 'One Shot' by Lee Child.

The movie starts with the murders of five people, in a public place. The killer shooting from a far distance using the telescopic gun. The police is successful in catching the culprit with in a day. At this time Jack Reacher (Tom Cruise), a former Military officer, reached there to help the defense lawyer. He thinks that the person in the custody, who is an expert shooter, can't kill all those people, in such a manner. Through investigation, a different version for the case has been found by him.

The director had presented the story in a cool manner, with the help of some excellent cinematographic visuals. Some of the camera angles, especially the visuals from the top and some other shots from the ground, needs special mention. In the middle, you have got a street fight, a thrilling chase through the heavy traffic (as we usually see in such action flicks), followed by an action packed climax. Unlike from the usual, you can see a soft Tom Cruise here. He did a fair job.

I watched the movie in the middle of small attendance. May be it has happened, due to the lack of proper promotional works for this project. Due to low collection, the theater had provided only a single show in a day. The people always love to watch action movies like 'MI' series, that comes from the same actor, one the other side, they are not interested in slow paced and good investigation subjects like 'Jack Reacher'.

"Jack Reacher is a watchable investigative thriller."'

CZ12 || Review

Compared to the last few years, the latest Jackie Chan's release has caught attention among the audiences; the good attendance (not 100%) shows this fact. The reason is simple, the new movie 'CZ12' came with the promotional campaign, claiming that it is Jackie Chan's last action venture.

I still remember, watching some of the old Chan hits like 'Spanish Connection', 'Armour of God', 'Police Story' series etc in the middle of fully packed audiences. But later, towards the end of 90's, such a situation changed. In the last decade, other than 'The Karate Kid', we did not witnessed a fair attendance for the majority shows of a Jackie Chan movie. Any way, I felt happy to see a large crowd, including families and kids for 'CZ12'.

The movie discusses the story of robbery. A team headed by our hero, is involved in robbing some of the valuable antique objects, mostly statues of animal heads. Thus the incidents are mainly focused on this cat and mouse game. The competition, betrayal, vengeance etc accompanied by some excellent action sequences, becomes the key.

Compared to the recent releases, this movie projects Jackie Chan in an youthful and more energetic style. The lengthy action sequence inside the factory, just before the climax fight, is the best example for this. It also reminds some of the old action movies by Chan. The group fighting on air at the end, is an unusual sight in Jackie Chan movies. The visual effects and the CG team did a great job there. The chase scene in the beginning was an interesting one. In short, the movie is a feast for lovers of Chan movies, in that sense, no need to cross check more on the logic side. More professionalism should have been done on the dubbing side. The scenes inside the forest felt lengthy and the English actors in the particular area, should have been more energetic on the performance side.

" A hard core fan of Jackie Chan should not miss an action adventure flick like CZ12."

Chapters || Review

The 17th IFFK conducted this month, has caused the delay in the release of the new movie 'Chapters', at the capital city. It is better to be late than never. The movie scripted and directed by new comer Sunil Ebraham, is produced by Shafeer Sait, who worked as a production executive for many years.

The presence of this much actors and the execution of the story in the first few scenes, gave the impression that 'Chapters' might be another example of the 'new generation movies' (don't know such a category really exists), with a parallel story line. The proceedings starts with four friends (Nivin Pauly, Hemanth, Vijeesh, Dharmajan), belonging to middle class families, decided to do an unusual business, for making money. The first party needs bulk amount of money for his sister's marriage and his friends are helping him to save money at any cost. Besides them, there are two other tracks of story, where a travel agent (Sreenivasan) and another group of friends (Rajath Menon, Vineeth Kumar, Aju Vargheese, Gowthami Nair etc) participates.

The presentation of the movie, where the story divided into three different chapters and the way in which they are connected, felt interesting. This style has got the flavor of some foreign films. A couple of good twists has been told here. The projected villain character in the third chapter, is a notable funny area to watch. The first half creates a lag in few places, the family drama episode is a cliche, the performance of Hemanth should have been better. Also one can doubt, whether the connection between at least a couple of characters in the two chapters, is a deliberate creation. But, the voice over in the end, is an answer for this. The theory is simple, our life still travels through the millions of stories that has never told...

Krish Kymal's cinematography is excellent. The hilly locations has been neatly captured by him. V.Saajan is the editor. Mejo Joseph's bg score is good for the mood, but the songs are not in the best form, also the couple of them shown here might only help to adjust the length of the movie. Nivin Pauly, Dharamajan, Vineeth Kumar, Manikandan, Shine Tom etc were the competent performers from the list. In his debut movie itself, Sunil Ibrahim has been successful in creating attention.

" Chapters is yet another experimental attempt with a different narrative style, that has to be appreciated."

I LOVE ME || Review

This year, one of the best characters from Mohanlal ('Grand Master') has been directed by B.Unnikrishnan. In the year end, the director has come up with a youthful oriented subject, 'I Love Me'. Unni Mukundan, Asif Ali and Anoop Menon comes in lead roles.

The notable thing happens on the scripting side. Sethu ('Mallu Singh' fame) is the script writer and for the first time; being a writer himself, B.Unnikrishnan showed the boldness to be the director of a script written by his junior colleague. Satheesh Kurup ('Pranayam', 'Jawan of Vellimala' fame) is the cinematographer. Many portions of the movie were shot in the city of Bangkok also.

The story starts with the narration of a multi millionaire businessman (Anoop Menon), from Bangkok. He reached Cochin and hired two local boys (Unni Mukundan, Asif Ali), who were engaged in fraud and mischieveous activities, for a big amount of money. As per the former's invitation, two of them, who were ready to do anything, reached abroad. They are waiting for the instructions from their boss, to start their mission.

The movie starts well, especially the Anoop's outlooks and the narration, created the style of some foreign movies. But, as the story progresses, the real tempo is lost and also the suspense is not revealed in a proper manner, rather the climax and twists revealed through the words of the characters, didn't created the correct impact and it creates confusion. Even the presence of two script writers can't save the project in that way. The unwanted
romance and some childish humor situations created extra lag.

Like Baburaj, another villain Biju Pappan also needed a change, within his short career span. The 'so called humorous role' done by him is totally absurd and creates restlessness, in place of laughing. In the olden days, in the movies done by Adoor Bhasi, Jagathi etc, if the hero is shifted to another place, without any notice the comedian also reached that place, in the scope of generating humour scenes. Like that, Biju Pappan's character also reached Bangkok, it was unnecessary and it totally spoils the atmosphere. The climax is shown as if it is happening in Bangkok, but from the visuals, even a small baby can identify that the location is somewhere in Cochin shipyard, an old cheating style used by the technicians, which has to be stopped soon. Another upset is the heroine Isha Talwar. Her body language looks awkward and dubbing is very unprofessional. I still wonder, how we liked her in 'Thattathin Marayathu' !

Anoop Menon did the role in his usual stylized way. Unni Mukundan is acrobatic in action scenes. There is nothing special in Asif Ali. Songs are not memorable, it happens at unwanted situations. The bg score is ok. Cinematographer Satheesh Kurup gave some colorful visuals. Manoj is the editor.

"I Love Me created some hope in the beginning, but the team has not been succeeded in maintaining the tempo till the end. Hard core fans of thrillers can try this, if you are so desperate to watch one."

Starring : Unni Mukundan, Asif Ali, Anoop Menon, Isha Talwar, Biju Pappan, Vijayakumar, Vanitha, Kadambari

Da Thadiya || Review

The story of bulky and fat men has been the theme for movies, since olden days. It was discussed in very few scenes or shots, to create a humour oriented atmosphere. This is the first time that a full length malayalam movie has got the story of a fat man.  The title of the movie itself is interesting, 'Daa Thadiyaa' and new face Sekhar Menon did the title role.

After giving back to back notable hits like 'Salt N Pepper' and '22FK', director Aashiq Abu comes with his next. The movie is written by Syam Pushkaran, Dileesh Nair and Abhilash S.Kumar, who worked with the director in his last two ventures. Shyju Khalid ('Salt N Pepper', 'Traffic' fame) is the cinematographer. Sekhar Menon, who did the role of the fat man, is a DJ by profession. Sreenath Bhasi, who worked in movies like '22FK', 'Pranayam', 'Arike' etc gets a notable role to perform. The movie is produced by Anto Joseph. 'Ithenthaanu Bhai...' song has already been the talk of the town, before the movie's release.

Luke (Sekhar Menon) and his cousin (Sreenath Bhasi) belongs to a family with a political background. Being a fatty boy, Luke is nick named Thadiyan. Luke's childhood friend and close companion (Ann Agustine), was also little bit fatty like him; but years after when she returned, she is a slim girl. Now she is asking Luke to control his obesity and as per her request Luke is joining a treatment course.

The movie does not have a challenging story line to be projected. It contains a message regarding the nature and the working style of Ayurveda treatment houses and the soft mindedness of fatty people. The story is not ended up in the best way it can. The hero and his politics path is an escapism done by the scripting team to end the journey in any way. Any way, the team has been successful in creating the movie with some lighter and funny moments, altogether it does not have a boring feel.

Sekhar Menon is ok for the role in terms of the body language, but his performance is not the best and convincing in some areas. Sreenath Bhasi, who is the narrator of the story, got a big role to do and he did it well. Ann Agustine is ok. The political team lead by Raju and Babu, did a fair job. Nivin Pauly is notable in his unusual role. Arundathi Nag is natural as the grand mother.

Cinematography by Shyju Khalid is colorful. V.Saajan is the editor. Biji Bal did a good job on the bg score side. 'Allah Allah...' and 'Ithenthaanu Bhai...' songs has already reached the hit charts.

"Don't expect anything big and special from Daa Thadiyaa, it is just a watchable one for a time pass."

Bavoottiyude Naamathil || Review

If a movie becomes a 'do or die' situation for a couple of people, including its lead actor, then it becomes a notable thing to watch. Mammootty, who has not got a single hit in the last couple of years from his 10 movies, desperately needed a success now. On the other hand, the movie's director G.S.Vijayan ('Charithram', 'Aanavaal Mothiram', 'Cheppadividya' fame) is doing a movie after 12 years. His last release was 'Cover Story', which was not a good success.

Here comes the man who needs to save both of them with his magical script work. The proposed person is director Renjith, who comes in the role of script writer for the movie. In the current scenario, he has got the potential to create wonders. The movie was announced with the title 'Malabar' and Anoop Menon was expected to share the screen space along with M. But, the situation has been changed and Shankar Ramakrishnan, a former associate to Renjith and the co-actor in 'Spirit', comes in place of Anoop. Renjith also comes in the role of producer.

Though Bavutty (Mammootty) is a driver, he is like one among the members of the family of the business man (Shankar Ramakrishnan), his wife (Kavya Madhavan) and two daughters. When ever any member of the family came across some problems, Bavutty is there to find solutions for it. The smooth proceedings has been affected when a stranger, who hails from the wife's native, reached their house, on a day.

The story line and the situations told in the movie are not new. This is not a classic style from Renjth also. But, the simple presentation of the story with the mix of some subtle humour, accompanied by the good performance of the actors, make it a watchable one. Of course, Bavutty's character is likely to touch our heart at few moments. G.S.Vijayan had presented the movie in a good manner without any gimmicks, a Renjith flavour is evident in many areas. The home video, which is very popular in the Malabar areas, has been covering some portions of the movie. But, the people who are unaware of this creativity, might feel that those visuals were lengthy.

Mammotty did an excellent show and looks natural, his comed ytiming is also notable. At parts, the hero's role reminds of 'Valasalyam' and 'Raappakal'. Not an usual contestant, Shankar Ramakrishnan did a good show without giving any unnatural actions and gestures. Kavya Madhavan did the house wife in a lovable manner. Rima Kallingal and Kaniha gave good support. This is a come back role for Vineeth. Harisree Asokan has got a serious role and did it well. Parvathi is a miscast, her crying scene is over acting. Manoj Pillai is the cinematpgrapher. Sandeep Nandakumar is the editor. Bg score by Bijibal is good.

"Bavuttiyude Naamathil might not be an unusual creativity, but it is simple and definitely a lovable movie for the family audiences."

Medium : Malayalam
Starring : Mammootty, Shankar Ramakrishnan, Kavya Madhavan, Kaniha, Rima Kallingal, Vineeth, Harisree Asokan, Sudheesh, Kottayam Nazeer, Arun Chandran, Mohan Jose, Parvathi

Karamayodha || Review

When Major Ravi announced his latest project 'Karmayodha' with Mohanlal, the biggest question asked was "still he wants another military subject, after getting couple of set backs through 'Kandahar' and 'Mission 90 Days' ?!". Some people said, "it is only a rumour, Lal is not going to waste his time, the project is not going to happen in the near future", any way 'Karmayodha' has released this weekend. The hero is not a military officer this time, but an Encounter Specialist in The Mumbai Police Dept.

The movie deals with the theme which is very relevant in the current period. Mohanlal is DCP Madhav Menon alias Maddy. While conducting the investigation on a girl missing case, Maddy came to know that the daughter of another woman (Asha Sharath) is also kidnapped. Following the kidnapper's route, he reached Kerala. The rest is how he deals with the criminal gangs and save the girls.

The movie has got a good one liner necessary for an investigative thriller. But, the biggest upset is that the director, with the help of new script writers (Sumesh & Shaji) had made the subject into a very ordinary action masala package. There are no twists and turns and there are no suspense elements also. Every thing is shown straightly, no new situations are there, even the dialogues are dramatic and repetitive and altogether the movie ended up as an action movie in the olden days, making every thing predictable. The ending fight at the ship yard is the best example. The villain is not projected in the required manner. The bollywood actor Murali Sharma is over acting in many areas, he is hard to be tolerable. Janardhanan's role is a cliche, but a few dialogues told by him is an eye opener for the society. The casting of the director's brother cum executive producer Kannan Pattambi in a local villain's role, shows that the team behind wants to finish the job, in a short cut manner.

Cinematographer Pradeep Nair's visuals are good. Don Max is the editor. Songs are not memorable. Jeffry Jonathan's bg score is ok, but not the best in many areas. Mohanlal did the lead role in his style. The title of the movie and the hero's appearance in beard, might not be a positive sign for the family audiences to reach theaters. Even after getting a current social relevant subject with a message, Major Ravi had not succeeded in creating a widely accepted output.

An ordinary action masala like Karmayodha doesn't delivers any thing new (even if it has got a social relevant theme), hard core Mohanlal fans can try this."

Medium : Malayalam
Starring : Mohanlal, Mukesh, Murali Sharma, Sai Kumar, Basil, Bineesh Kodiyeri, Janardhanan, Rajeev Pillai, Sudheer Karaman, Anil Murali, Kannan Pattambi, Roni, Asha Sharath, Sona, Sukumari

The Hobbit : An Unexpected Journey || Review

The fans of 'The Lord of the Rings' series, has got another movie to cherish. This is due to the release of the new Hollywood movie 'The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey'. It is directed by Peter Jackson, the same creator of the 'The Lord of the Rings' trilogy.

The new movie is an adaptation from the writer of 'TLOTR', J.R.R.Tolkin's novel 'The Hobbit'. This first part release will be followed by two more releases in the following years. Before watching, when I asked my friend, who is a great fan of foreign movies, about this Hobbit movie, he replied that "the movie is good, but you need to follow The Lord of the Rings trilogy and the characters in it, to understand the new release also". This put me in dilemma, the reason is simple, I had watched all the movies of 'The Lord of the Rings' series and I loved them, but still I don't know the original story
of them...!

'The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey' deals with the robbery of gold from the dwarf King by the giant dragon and the way in which the dwarf team headed by the Hobbit, conducts the hectic journey to get back the gold. On the way, they have to face highly destructive battles, even the nature stands against them. Though the duration of the movie runs near to three hours, we didn't get a good ending here. As there are sequels to follow, the director had not tried to kill the duck laying the golden egg.

The movie introduces a new technology; capturing the visuals using 48frames per second style instead of the usual 24fps style, that has been practicing for decades. It didn't create any nuisance or black mark for the viewers, so we should assume that the new style got worked out well, but the advantage of this method is yet to be known. The movie is notable for its visual effects and CG sequences. The action scenes were impressive. The costumes, art and make up departments did their job well. Cinematographer Andrew Lesnie did an excellent job.

The length of the movie should have been cut short for a smooth watch. The director wants to repeat 'The Lord of the Rings' magic here. But, I don't know, whether the trilogy concept works smoothly in the case of 'The Hobbit'. Those who have read the story can clearly comment on this.

"The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey is an adventure fantasy entertainer from Hollywood. Those who are very particular in watching the same, can go with your kids, who follows such types of fantasy literary works."

Medium : English
Starring : Martin Freeman, Ian McKellen, Richard Armitage, James Nesbitt, Ken Stott, Cate Blanchett
