The story of bulky and fat men has been the theme for movies, since olden days. It was discussed in very few scenes or shots, to create a humour oriented atmosphere. This is the first time that a full length malayalam movie has got the story of a fat man. The title of the movie itself is interesting, 'Daa Thadiyaa' and new face Sekhar Menon did the title role.
After giving back to back notable hits like 'Salt N Pepper' and '22FK', director Aashiq Abu comes with his next. The movie is written by Syam Pushkaran, Dileesh Nair and Abhilash S.Kumar, who worked with the director in his last two ventures. Shyju Khalid ('Salt N Pepper', 'Traffic' fame) is the cinematographer. Sekhar Menon, who did the role of the fat man, is a DJ by profession. Sreenath Bhasi, who worked in movies like '22FK', 'Pranayam', 'Arike' etc gets a notable role to perform. The movie is produced by Anto Joseph. 'Ithenthaanu Bhai...' song has already been the talk of the town, before the movie's release.
Luke (Sekhar Menon) and his cousin (Sreenath Bhasi) belongs to a family with a political background. Being a fatty boy, Luke is nick named Thadiyan. Luke's childhood friend and close companion (Ann Agustine), was also little bit fatty like him; but years after when she returned, she is a slim girl. Now she is asking Luke to control his obesity and as per her request Luke is joining a treatment course.
The movie does not have a challenging story line to be projected. It contains a message regarding the nature and the working style of Ayurveda treatment houses and the soft mindedness of fatty people. The story is not ended up in the best way it can. The hero and his politics path is an escapism done by the scripting team to end the journey in any way. Any way, the team has been successful in creating the movie with some lighter and funny moments, altogether it does not have a boring feel.
Sekhar Menon is ok for the role in terms of the body language, but his performance is not the best and convincing in some areas. Sreenath Bhasi, who is the narrator of the story, got a big role to do and he did it well. Ann Agustine is ok. The political team lead by Raju and Babu, did a fair job. Nivin Pauly is notable in his unusual role. Arundathi Nag is natural as the grand mother.
Cinematography by Shyju Khalid is colorful. V.Saajan is the editor. Biji Bal did a good job on the bg score side. 'Allah Allah...' and 'Ithenthaanu Bhai...' songs has already reached the hit charts.
"Don't expect anything big and special from Daa Thadiyaa, it is just a watchable one for a time pass."
