Normally, the promotional trailer of a movie might starts running, some weeks before its release only, or a couple of months before, but in the case of the new bollywood venture 'Bhaag Milkha Bhaag' it started playing almost six to eight months before its release and more over it created a great impression, as it is the biography of the 'Flying Singh' alias Milkha Singh. The body language and appearance of Farhan Akhtar, who comes in the lead role, was a surprising one.
The movie is directed by Rakesh Omprakash Mehra, the director of 'Aks', 'Rang De Basanthi' and 'Delhi 6'. He has chosen Farhan Akhtar, the director of 'Dil Chahtha Hai', 'Lakshya', 'Don', 'Don 2', who later became actor through 'Luck By Chance', 'Rock On', 'Karthik Calling Karthik', 'Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara' etc; ro do the title role.The script is written by Prasoon Joshi. 'Bhaag Milkha Bhaag' is produced by Viacom 18 and ROM productions. Music is by Shankar Ehsaan Loy.
The movie starts with the contreversial incident at the Rome Olympics in 1960, where Milkha Singh, who was running in the first postion, turns side ways to look the fellow runners, thus loosing the bronze within a matter of micro seconds. Milkha's real story is revealed through a flash back, where he lost his entire family in Punjab, due to the riots happened, during the India - Pak division of 1947. Being so affectionate to his elder sister, Milkha grown up with the street kids, stealing things. He has got a romance in the later stages, as per her wish he decided to lead a good life. He joined Indian Army. He won a marathon race there, which later changed his life. He gets aggressive coaching and later make his way to become the pride of Indian Athletics.
The great effort from director Rakesh Omprakash Mehra needs special appreciation. To create a historical venture is never an easy task. The attraction of the movie is none other than Farhan Akhtar, who gave a splendid performance. His body language and physical fitness is incredible, especially the running scenes shows the good commitment of the actor. Sonam Kapoor grabs attention in few scenes. Praksh Raj is ok. Pavan Malhotra, Yograj Singh and Divya Dutta were good.
Though, the movie is a biography on Milkha Singh, it is not sure whether the director has been 100% successful in showing it, there are few missing links in between. Any way, the movie is notable in a way that an average viewer might be able to understand more about one of the fastest athlets that India has ever produced. The movie that runs at 3.10 hours, lags here and there in the second half, some of the areas needed a trimming. The age factor of Milkha's sister does not match with her appearance.
Binod Pradhan's cinematography is wonderful. The grading style used in the game scenes matches the mood in a good manner. The running shots has been captured with the best accurate way. P.Bharathi is the editor. Songs by Shankar Ehsaan Loy matches the situations, bg score travels with the show.
Bhaag Milkha Bhaag is a biographical attempt on India's great athlete Milkha Singh. You can watch the movie, keeping this in mind and also to see Farhan Akhtar, at his best.
